I want to share a few ideas and give you some tools that will help you:
- feel more spiritually aligned;
- be more proactive; and
- know that you are headed in the right direction in your life and business.
And we need to start with the word ‘God’…
I’ve noticed how many people find the word God impossibly hard to use. How many people use words like Source or Energy instead. And I’m OK with that, but it speaks to a powerful miscommunication about what God is.
Some people believe in angels and spirit guides but conveniently put the God part aside. This concerns me a LOT.
A friend once told me that I shouldn’t use the word God on my website because it will scare people off. I didn’t want to agree with her. But it was true… and confronting because I had to question:
What do people think spirituality actually is?! And why are they on this journey without God? How can we miss the mark of ‘spirituality’ so deeply?
This is what I began to see…
Many of us are drawn to spirituality because we feel unloved, judged, or betrayed. We’re seeking meaning, which spirituality seems to promise us.
Moreover, we want to honor that voice calling out from within us, telling us that there is more to life and spirituality is the way to find it.
Alongside all of that, we can find the concept of God incredibly hard because the story we grew up with was of a judgemental God, brought to us through people who learned to judge via their story of God.
And that judgment, which many of us still carry around today, was anchored in the rules that we were supposed to live by… If we just followed the rules and were ‘good’ people then everything would be OK.
But they were rules that:
Didn’t make sense to us.
Didn’t work for us.
Denied us a connection to the people around us.
Were impossible, even, to follow.
Many years ago the Teachers told me that spirituality needed to be simplified. And ALL the unnecessary rules which limit our connection to God, rather than enhancing it, needed to be removed.
And this is what they brought to me:
Spirituality is a PERSONAL conversation between me and God.
That’s all it needs to be for most people. There does NOT need to be a church, or a bible, or a minister, or anything else in the middle of that conversation.
You can, and should, go straight to the source of information about God for yourself.
You can talk to God in your head, in your heart, on paper, in a rage, in quiet moments of reflection… just talk TO God.
If you don’t go straight to God for yourself, then you are watering down your understanding of God. You are seeing God through other people’s eyes. And how can that bring TRUTH, resolution, and love to YOU?
When you go straight to God you take out the judgment, you take out the expectations, you take out the idea that God might not love you through your inability to follow the rules.
More importantly, you take yourself completely out of a conversation that asks: why, if you’ve been a good person, are you facing this disease/financial lack/cheating partner?
I’ve come to see this as the number one most damaging conversation we can have with ourselves. Because it prevents us from taking command over the direction of our lives.
And I’m not immune to this conversation. But I have learned to question it…
If thoughts create feelings, and feelings create actions, which lead to results. Then what does this thought result in?!
Nothing, at best. Hardship, at worst. The intense emotional hardship we bring about through this ‘why me?’ conversation keeps us in suffering…
Many of us are stuck feeling that God has ultimate control over our lives. And if we’ve not been good enough, or followed the rules, then God/Universe/Other People/The Powers That Be are showing us how unworthy of God’s love we are.
But it’s all a lie.
A lie that started with an incredibly limited view of what God is, and who we are to God.
In fact, for many people, this thought is so ingrained that they will attack others through their judgment. For instance, I received an email a few years ago saying that God will condemn me and all my followers, for saying that God will help us create the vision we have for our own lives…
I don’t see God in that view. I see someone who’s own mind is so tangled through limited teachings about ‘God’ that they have completely missed the mark of love, respect, and grace.
Is this what religious thought has become? And why would any loving, soulful person seeking meaning want to follow a God that seeks to destroy, rather than lift up?
So I understand why so many people have rejected God. I see why the word God is so hard to use. I know why it’s easier to talk about Source and Universe.
But it’s also a passive stance. Because deeper down most of us have an honest, raw, loving view of God that we just need permission to open up to.
It’s our soul’s insight of God really is.
And when we look at that, we see that God isn’t the problem.
God isn’t religion. Religion is human-made. God was around LOOOONG before men came up with institutionalized thoughts about what God is and who we are to God 😉
It’s the ‘human’ thoughts and limited teachings AROUND God that are the problem.
I see God as the Source Energy is the Universe. Not just Source and not just Universe. And certainly not some man up there in the clouds casting judgment, or pointing the finger at those who’ve apparently “sinned”.
I see God as the energy around us that helps us to create the life that will bring us fulfillment.
I see God as a consciousness that supports us and lifts us up regardless of what we’ve supposedly done ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ in life. And without having to redeem ourselves for these apparent sins we’ve committed.
I also see God as a kind of portrayal of me – the insight I have access to, the love I have to offer, the acceptance I can take part in.
I see God as my mirror, a guide, a way of navigating my life… if things aren’t working out, it’s not because I’m being punished, it’s because there’s something I’m not taking care of.
If I’m not getting the results I want, it’s because I need to look more deeply at MYSELF – the thoughts I have, which are leading to feelings, and then to actions and results.
And in that space I can, and do, ask God for guidance, support, and for protection when I’m missing the mark.
(Which, by the way, is the original meaning of the word ‘sin’ – to miss the mark.)
So… what happens when we simplify spirituality and start a deeply personal conversation with God? One where we even get to ask the ‘why me’ questions and get resolution for them.
I’m going to share HOW to have that conversation in the next post.
But here’s something to think about now:
When we sit in conversation with God direct we begin to receive the actual steps that need to be taken to RECEIVE what we want in life.
There’s no judgment in that. Just guidance.
And if we take a step further back, and ask God what it is in our best interests to ask for – what is in alignment with our greatest purpose, and for our deepest fulfillment – we understand ourselves more deeply.
There’s no sense of being worthy or unworthy in that. There’s just growth.
We see that there is no greater force out there gifting some people who’ve been ‘good’ and not others. We are all here to experience LIFE with God’s HELP!
Stay tuned for part 2…
In the meantime, ask yourself what you need to see of God for yourself, right now? What will lift YOU up and bring YOU a sense of love, protection, and guidance?
Because it’s available. You don’t have to fight for it. You simply need to see it and then accept it as your rightful gift from God. (THAT’S what grace is!)
